One-year master programme in electronics, optics and photonics, focused on research. The topics included: Photonic Systems, Emebedded Systems for the IoT, Radio Frequency Systems, Electronic Sensors & Instrumentation, Management of Technology, and two short research projects.
Dissertation Topic:
MIMO Radio over Fiber Systems
Mark 70/100
Supervisor: Prof. Richard Penty
A simulation-based project using VPI Photonics for the transmission of multiple RF MIMO channels over a single optical link. Independent work and training in the use of the simulator. The final result: the double number of MIMO channels, from previous work in the group, within the required commercial standards.
Multicore fiber-based clock synchronisation for ultra-low latency data centre interconnections
Mark 73/100
Supervisor: Dr. Zhixin Liu
An experimental project using multi-core fiber (MCF) to measure the inter-core skew variations with temperature. Implemented an interferometer using the MCF and the laboratory equipment, (such as lasers, couplers, photodetectors, oscilloscopes) and computed the values of the thermally induced variations programming in MATLAB. Coordinated the experiments with members of the Optical Network Group – UCL. The results demonstrated an increase in inter-core skew variations with MCF’s temperature.
